"Full Day"

From your hotel, we drive east along the south coast towards Furnas. On our way we will pass in Caloura, which is a very good spot for scuba diving (dives can be arranged through our individual tours) and then to Vila Franca do Campo where, among other things, we will see the Lady of Peace Chapel. Then we will make our way to Lagoa das Furnas to the beautiful volcanic lake also called the “Heart of São Miguel”.

The village of Furnas is situated in the middle of the crater and you will see the volcanic action as steam escaping from the ground and bubbling hot mud. The latter is used in medical treatments. By the lake you will see how the local people and restaurants cook their meals by burying the food in pots in the ground, where they leave it to simmer for several hours. If you wish you can sample the speciality “cozido” at a restaurant but I have to book a table for you the day before. In the streets of Furnas there are places where different mineral waters are running out of the rock and you can sample them straight from the rock. The famous and beautiful botanical gardens of terra nostra are also to be found in Furnas.

Our journey will continue through the districts of Povoação and Nordeste, also called the “Garden of Eden”, located at the eastern end of the island. The name “Garden of Eden” is not coincidental as the nature is indescribably magnificent and awe inspiring.

Finally we will visit the Vila do Nordeste before we return home by the north coast of the island, stop ping at the waterfall close to the village of Achada. Many visitors consider this stop makes the whole trip worthwhile.
